Love Food Hate Waste welcomes celebrity ambassadors

Love Food Hate Waste today announces a team of five celebrity ambassadors hungry to support the nationwide campaign in halving avoidable household food waste by 2025.

Actress and director Sunetra Sarker joins celebrity chefs Rachael Khoo, James Strawbridge, Richard Fox and Shane Jordan in helping the LFHW team raise awareness to tackle the 4.2 million tonnes of good food and drink wasted every year in UK homes, costing households £12.5 billion.

“We are so delighted to have these five ambassadors pledging their support for the LFHW campaign. I know how committed they are to helping everyone reduce the food they throw away, striving to save the average family up to £60 per month. It will be a pleasure to work alongside them in the coming years” said Emma Marsh, Head of Love Food Hate Waste.

Sunetra Sarker said, “It’s staggering to think that the food and drink thrown away every year from our homes could fill the Albert Hall more than 210 times! As a busy working mother I know how hard it can be to keep on top of running a household, but the food waste problem is costing the average family £700 a year. It’s environmentally damaging as well as a waste of time, energy, water and land. We need to urgently raise awareness of this issue and Love Food Hate Waste is doing just that. The campaign helps people to make the most of their food at home and save money through fantastic advice, guidance and information and I’m incredibly proud to support Love Food Hate Waste to help make a real difference.”

LFHW supporter Rachel Khoo explains, “Anyone who follows my blog will know I'm a big fan of loving leftovers, but for those who don't, this is why I'm supporting the Love Food Hate Waste campaign. This is something I feel passionate about; growing up in my house as a child we'd often eat a complete mish-mash of things - leftover roast meat and potatoes, some noodles and whatever else my Mum could find lurking in the fridge. These were meals I looked forward to and enjoyed every week, and it’s an ethos I've taken with me throughout my culinary career!”

James Strawbridge said, “As a chef I’m passionate about using great quality ingredients and like most people, I hate seeing them go to waste. Love Food Hate Waste is a great campaign and I am excited to be joining the team in the effort to help reduce food waste and help people to save money too. For me, catering for restaurants or feeding my young family offers the same challenge of portion control and trying to serve the right amount of food to stay healthy, satisfy my customers and avoid wasting money. With a little thought - it's hungry mouths I spend effort feeding and not the bin. I have also spent many years growing and rearing my own meat, fruit and vegetables so hate to see all the hard work spent outside producing good food going to waste. Basically I really love good food and absolutely hate wasting it - especially when there are so many creative ways to use up leftovers and easy kitchen tips out there to transform scraps into gourmet meals. ”
Richard Fox says, “I have been involved with the Love Food Hate Waste campaign for several years now and am passionate about helping people to create great meals from their leftovers. Having worked closely with members of the public recently through live cookery demonstrations I know how keen people are not to waste food. Love Food Hate Waste offers straightforward tips and advice to help people to waste less and save more and I am proud to be supporting them on their journey to reducing food waste.”

Shane Jordan agrees, “Being an ambassador for Love Food Hate Waste is a privilege. Love Food Hate Waste is the cornerstone of reducing food waste and building awareness of environmental issues. The fact that I have been formally recognised as an ambassador means that I have played a significant role in bringing public awareness to the subject of food waste.”

The Ambassadors will be promoting the work of Love Food Hate Waste and helping everyone to reduce the amount of good food and drink that is thrown away from UK homes each and every day.

  3. The average person in the UK wastes around £200 a year by buying and then throwing away good food and drink. This rises to £470 for the average household and £700 for a family with children.
