WRAP and Valpak to carry out new paper and card packaging flow research

6th August 2015

Following collaborative projects on the market flow of glass, metals and plastic packaging, WRAP and Valpak are now working together to research paper and card packaging flows.

The paper and card flow project aims to provide Defra with robust and independent updated estimates of the amount of paper and card packaging placed on the market (POM), and the amount recycled, recovered or sent to landfill for the period 2014-2020 in the UK. Such estimates are at the core of Defra’s policy development and are used to fulfil EU requirements for reporting recycling performance for the UK.

In order to help achieve the objectives of the work, Valpak has established a steering group made of industry, Defra and Environment Agency members to oversee and provide insights into the outputs.

For further information or to contribute to the project please contact Kathy Illingworth at Valpak (kathy.illingworth@valpak.co.uk).

Supporting quote: Simon Weston of the CPI commented:  “the paper industry has for a long time been a leading material in recycling and this work will provide valuable insight not only into the amount of material in the UK but also help identify where improvements can be made”.

Timings: The project will report in early 2016.
